The Port of Algoma is strategically located on the St. Mary’s River at the tip of Lake Superior, an integral part of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System. The location is a pivotal point of connection between Lake Superior, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. The Port has historically been a dedicated port facility for Essar Steel Algoma, one of the largest integrated steel producers in Canada built on a rich steelmaking tradition dating back to 1901.
Given the logistical potential of the location, the Port of Algoma is being carved out as a separate business entity under Essar Ports Global Holdings Ltd, Mauritius, to redevelop the port as an International Marine Gateway for handling all commercial cargo including Essar Steel Algoma cargo.
